Blogging. It’s a tool that allows an audience to take a look into someone’s personal life. Traditional blogging is still around, but is it being overshadowed by the many types of modern blogging? There’s vlogging, Instagram influencers, and YouTubers – social media has allowed blogging to be taken to a new level.

Vlogging is blogging, but with a video camera. Vloggers tell their story by recording themselves sitting at home discussing a topic, going to try a new restaurant, or when they’re traveling: the options are endless. Vlogs can be housed on a variety of channels. Some may post their videos on their traditional blog site or create quick videos on Snapchat or Instagram Stories. Another way to vlog is to go Live on Facebook or Instagram. Many bloggers use this tool when they are at an event or want to conduct a Q&A with their followers. Thinking of starting a vlog? Check out these quick tips from Vlog Nation:

As YouTube is a channel solely for videos, this platform gives vloggers a direct connection to their desired audience. There are endless types of YouTube channels such as beauty, comedy, political, video gaming to name a few. YouTubers have the potential to gain popularity, and a handful are even considered celebrities. These YouTube stars are able to turn vlogging from a hobby into a career. Pixlee describes an influencer as “users who have an established credibility and audience; who can persuade others by virtue of their trustworthiness and authenticity.” Breaking it down even further, there are micro-influencers and mega-influencers. Micro-influencers have between 500 and 10,000 followers. Macro-influencers have around 10,000 and 500,000 followers. Mega-influencers start at 1 million followers. Instagram influencers make blogging even more accessible to those who are considering starting one. Influencers choose the topic they are most passionate about and photograph themselves doing it. Fashion influencers are sponsored by brands they support, and in return, they will wear their clothes. The same goes for beauty influencers; they use products from their sponsors and encourage their audience to use them as well. Instagram is all about how the influencer portrays themself, so their pictures are the focus of this type of blog. Visually appealing photos gain attention, leading Instagram influencers to a larger following. So, what does it take to get that perfect photo? Notes from Joanna’s blog tells how she makes her Instagram feed pop.

While it may seem that modern blogging is taking over, this doesn’t mean that traditional blogging is dead. Many bloggers have a combination of the two. Traditional blogs are great for longer posts, personal stories, or when you just want to write out your thoughts. Combining traditional blogging with modern blogging allows you to engage even more with an audience and see what they really enjoy. Usually, a social channel has more followers than a website, so a modern blog is a tool to promote a traditional blog. Everyone’s style is different and finding the right blog channel can help it take off.
